Pain Management

The doctors and staff of Fork Union Animal Clinic are committed to reducing the discomfort of our patients and improving their quality of life.
Every patient that undergoes surgery at Fork Union Animal Clinic has an individualized pre and post surgical pain management plan  formulated by the attending veterinarian. These plans may include the use of injectable and oral medication as well as local anesthetic blocks and continuous IV infusions. We also believe that the use of lasers during and after surgery will dramatically reduce post operative pain and swelling and as a result speed healing for our patients.
Patients that present with chronic sources of pain will similarly have an individualized multimodal pain management program developed to address their specific needs.
A multimodal approach to pain management addresses pain using multiple approaches. This method of pain management has been shown to be far superior to a single medication due to the synergistic nature of these different pain treatments.
Common methods of addressing chronic pain such as osteoarthritis include the following:
  • NSAID drugs such as Rimadyl, Metacam or Deramaxx
  • Weight control and exercise modification
  • Cartilage protectants such as Synovi G3 or Adequan
  • Special diets rich in EPA fatty acids such as Hills J/D
  • Adjunctive therapy such as MLS laser therapy
  • Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
  • Non NSAID drugs such as Tramadol, Amantadine or Gabapentin used alone or in combination with NSAIDs
